The COGAIN network pays attention to the gender issues by encouraging and supporting female participation in all levels.

The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union states: ''Equality between men and women must be ensured in all areas''. The Science and Society in Europe theme within the European Research Area program is the European Commission's effort to take ''science out of the lab and into the public arena''. The European Commission established a group of national representatives (in the 15 EU Member States and 17 associated countries) responsible for issues about gender equality in science.
