How does the page-set work?
Encoding, or the process of putting together a message using letters and such things as color coding, has been employed by eye gaze users for 30+ years. This page set uses this proven technique to provide quick access to letters for typing a message. Instructions: 1. Look at or select a color representing the color of the letter you want i.e. if you want the letter “C” (which is colored blue), look at the cell containing the blue oval. This will cause all of the blue letters on the page to be highlighted. 2. Select the letter you want.

How does the grid work?
This grid has 2 cells across and 2 cells down. It is an example of a grid that presents two choices to the end-user: 1) "it was fun" and 2) "it was boring". It enables the end-user to participate in evaluating activities at an early, introductory level.
Early Communication

How does the grid work?
This grid is a menu for different activities or topics. It is designed for an end-user at an early communication stage, and who has recently been introduced to an eye gaze system and communication software for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). There is a lot of space intended for gradual development towards a more advanced use. It is set to use speech synthesis, but digital speech can also be recorded and used.
The end-user can choose between playing favourite their music, telling stories with pictures, writing a simple diary or answering quiz-questions. The grid-set also contains a question methodology and structure. The user with help from the communication partner can go through this to solve misunderstandings, or find out about things that they do not have any other means of communication to explain. The menu includes the answers yes, no and I don’t know.

This grid is designed for evaluating the activities of the session. The user can say "Today I..." and then choose appropriate activities, here "played music" and "played Simon says". Then he she can chose between the following opinions: "It was fun", "It was boring". "It was easy" and "It was hard". This is a useful way to get the users opinion (can be printed) and it can be used over and over if you just update the list of activities.
This is just an example of a design and is not available for download, however, it should be easy implement a similar grid following the description.

How does the grid work?
This grid has 3 cells across and 2 cells down and enables the end-user to express their feelings. Three pages exist behind the '123' numbers page: 1) an ABCD, 2) a chat with Mum and 3) a feelings page. This grid-set illustrates how a simple evaluation grid might be extended further, by including more choices and by using it alongside a motivating activity. This grid contains both Rebus and PCS symbols.
How does the grid work?
This grid has been based on the communication book of symbols and text developed by Helen, her family and supporting team over many years. It has 4 cells across and 6 cells down. There are three contents pages: the first shown above links to 42 vocabulary pages; the second to 26; and the third to 13. This grid contains both Rebus and PCS symbols. A vital email page lets Helen independently keep in touch with family and friends.

Playing is supposed to be fun, but can be difficult and frustrating if you don’t have the vocabulary needed to engage with other children. This 3 x 3 page set provides a starter vocabulary to allow users to participate in play activities with their peers.

How does the page-set work?

How does the grid work?
This is an example of an easy communication grid, made in VS Communicator 3 Pro, with a menu page that contains four buttons for some quick talk and four buttons that will open new pages, one with a letter board and phrases, one with questions, one with riddles and one with chat about favourite interest (in this example ice hockey). The two grids with the riddles and their answers are colour coded, to help the user to choose the right answer.

This is an example of an application for communication with PCS-symbols, made in VS Communicator 3 Pro, and the layout is the same as the user’s low-tech communication book.
